Since ships sailed the high seas:
The history of Rum and Batavia Arrack has its roots in the days when the
world was discovered with sailing ships.
Rum
Numerous books have been written to commemorate the incredible story of
this remarkable spirit, its history entwined with tales of pirates, slaves,
colonialism and the Royal Navy. All Rum producers have an individual story
to tell about the role Rum has played in the heritage of their country.
Batavia Arrack
This lesser known spirit also has great history dating back to the days
when Chinese distillers were commissioned to produce a spirit from the
sugar cane in Indonesia. Actually the sugarcane plant was being grown
in this area more than 8.000 years ago, well before its westward journey
6.500 years later towards the Caribbean. Distilling was a skill mastered
by the Chinese in very early days, mainly for medicinal purposes.
